Bookshop

Bookshop crossword sudasudacoffee

Quote: Wear the old coat and buy the new book.
Author: Austin Phelps
Photographer: Dheepak Ra

I first read this in a book mark which came along with the books I purchased in this shop. Everyone has their own favourite bookshops. During my academic days, it was the majestic Higginbothams in chennai. Immediately after I came to Bangalore, it was Prism book shop. Eventhough there is Strand booksore in my office campus itself, I usually goto either Landmark in Forum or Crossword in MGRoad. Particularly the latter has its own charm.

Also the CafeCoffeeDay in Crossword, has a nice ambience.

I was just recollecting the beautiful writings of George Orwell and on of his works was about a bookshop where he worked.

Regards

One way you can wear a new coat "and" read all the books you want is to join a library. Atleast that's what i do. My saturdays include a round trip to all the town's major libraries :)
Though there is a kick in owning your own volume but there is something addictive about the smell of aging paper & bound books that is present in all libraries...

Lh, You seem to be online netime. When do u hit the sack?

Amarjeet, During my college days, you can catch me in libraries only. Apart from my college library, I used to visit IIT Lib once a week and British Council Lib thrice a week (they had free internet browsing too). As if that is not enough, I force my mother to get me some from her office library too :) Those were the good old days.

Anyway these days, I either buy second hand books or else even catch hold of online ebooks. With good softwares they dont strain your eyes at all.

Yeah!! Only Libraries have that pleasing musty booky smell thats soothing. The swanky book shops like Crossword/Landmark do not have this ...this....heritage.
Even better, I love browsing through the Second hand book shops - u never know when u'll spot a gem of a book.I feel the roadside sellers are better than established second hand book shops. In that category, I quite like the one on the pavement near Cool Joint in Jaya Nagar 4th Block. That guy's got some really nice books.
And BTW Deepak, what camera do ya have? I guess its a mobile camera?

Srini, "used to be"?

Cne, If that is the case then you should check out Avenue road. I have never been there but heard a lot about it. Another place which I can recommend is the small basement shops in several places of jayanagar. As far as camera, its not mobile camera. Its just that I reduce the resolution to post it in the blog. (I have only free account in flickr - so I need to worry about size restrictions)

Meera, A phone call is all that is required for Crossword to ensure that they procure the book for us. Its the same case with Prism in Jayanagar too (two floors of books). Only reason I dont like landmark as much is bcoz its too crowded and too noisy. Its ambience is never the one of a bookshop.

LH, let me reboot u :)

oh that short story by George Orwell, i had it in my english book in school. Can't recall the name of the story...

Landmark wins over crossword for me. Crossword is too cluttered i feel. Strand wins for the prices though!

If ambience is what u want then oxford in Leela Palace is great, though small

I think crossword isnt too crowded but I fully agree with you regarding the prices in Strand bookstall. 15mins back I bought some books in Strand outlet in Infy campus and they were offering min of 20% discount on all titles.
